FULL OF VITAMINS AND MINERALS
Nutrition plays a vital role in our lives as it has a direct effect on our health. This is why it is important to consume foods that fuel our bodies with good nutrients to keep us going daily. With that being said, corn is no exception to the rule! Some of the great vitamins found in sweet corn are niacin, folic acid, pantothenic acid, and Vitamin B6. It also has potassium which is great for heart health and blood pressure regulation. There are other properties found in corn like antioxidants and other plant compounds that make this a great food for you to add to your meals.
EASY TO GROW
While food is easily accessible to us in today’s world, whether it be from supermarkets, restaurants, or even food delivery services, being able to grow your food is still a great skill. It may be difficult for you if you haven’t tried doing that before but luckily, corn is a vegetable that is a feasible place to start.
Before you begin, first make sure that you have enough space to grow it healthily. You should seek to have at least a 10-by-10-feet area to guarantee your plants are pollinated properly. The more space you have in your garden for it to grow, the better your corn will be when it is time to reap your harvest. When you are ready to start planting, sow your corn seed about six inches apart in rows that are about three feet apart. Corn needs a lot of water to grow nicely so be sure to water your plants frequently. It’s best to give these crops about two inches of water on a weekly basis. Growing pretty rapidly, corn is ready to harvest in typically 20 days after the silks begin to show up. They are ready to go when they are cut open, and the kernels appear to be milky and firm.
CAN BE ENJOYED IN A VARIETY OF WAYS
Roasted corn
A staple at many BBQs, roasted corn is one of our favorite ways to have corn. It is delicious and has a bold flavor due to it being grilled. You can feel free to add butter and seasoning to give it an extra bang, but even by itself, it is still great.
Boiled corn
This is a quick and easy way to enjoy corn all year round. For this method, you bring some water to a boil and then salt to your desired taste. Following that, add your corn to the water and let it cook for about five minutes or so. The corn is finished cooking once the water re-boils after you added it in. Take it out and enjoy it as is, or add seasoning and some butter to your liking.
Elote
This popular Mexican street food is arguably one of the best ways to serve corn. It has a distinct flavor that is just enjoyable until the very last bite! It is prepared similarly to roasted corn, the main difference is the specific toppings added to make this dish really tasty. After the corn has been grilled to perfection, add sour cream, cotija cheese, mayo, garlic, cilantro, chile powder, and lime juice to it. This is one recipe you’ll be sure to love!
Outside of the great methods we have shared to eat corn, there are many other ways to try out this great vegetable. Not to mention, corn is used in an endless amount of dishes and products that we enjoy daily whether we know it or not. We definitely share the same amount of love for corn as the Corn Kid, if not, more!
