Fall is all about foliage, and many of the cool-season plants in this combo are known more for their leaves than their flowers. Hakonechloa, foamflower and coral bells usually prefer shade. But in the cool temps and weaker sunshine of fall, you can put them into full sun and they’ll be fine. Once garden mums have formed buds, they can be moved into full sun or full shade. However, in shade, buds often open slower. In sun, rich colors fade faster, which they have done here.

Fill your fall container with kale
Kale is one of the most useful fall plants you can find because it will survive freezing temperatures. And as you see here there are lots of good-looking shapes and colors to work with. All of them are edible, but you may not want to change the look of your container by plucking too many leaves! Kale can also grow quite large. Two windowboxes, one in front of the other, allow plenty of room for all the plants and make for a full, lush look.
Don’t bother leaving space for the plants in fall containers to grow. You want a mature, and full, look right away, so choose plants that are the sizes you need and pack them in. In most regions, they won’t grow much in the cool weather and will stop completely by winter.
